Mid-Core Gamer Review: Dead Space

Dead Space is a survival horror game in a 3rd person perspective. Taking  the role  of an engineer named Isaac Clarke you battle virus-like alien infestations called “Corruption” ,which turns dead humans into monsters called Necromorphs. The game begins with you investigating a ship that has been sending out distress calls.  You can pickup the movie Dead Space: Downfall which discusses how everything started. I recommend beating the game first before checking out the film because it ruins some of the surprises that you experience playing the game.

Title: Dead Space

The Good:

This is one of the first games in EA’s new intellectual properties(IP’s). I applaud EA for trying out new IP’s and I think it paid off. This game is very fun and challenging, but not  to the point of annoyance. The game-play is 3rd person over the shoulder, hold left trigger to aim and right trigger to shoot. The only way to kill the monsters is to aim for the limbs. Unlike other games where you aim for the head or the torso, a few good shots to the limbs are all you need to take these monsters down. It reminds me of the good old “Soldier of Fortune” days. The game takes on a lot of jumps and jitters. Often you think something is dead, you walk over and it jumps out at you, scaring your pants off.  The best part of this game, is never being confused about where to go. Just hit the left thumb-stick and an arrow points the way to your next objective. I can’t stand other games that don’t tell you where to go, so your left roaming around aimlessly. Lastly, the puzzles mostly involve finding parts and putting them in the correct location, or jumping on a moon placing bombs, then hitting timed explosives all while running from monsters.

The Bad:

The game has a few faults; but, for one it feels too long. Second, some areas are too difficult to beat and get past, especially since ammo is so sparse and difficult to find at times. Since you are on the same ship most of the game, everything starts to look the same. A little more color wouldn’t hurt the game. The monsters also all start to look the same and start to get boring and repetitive. The missions can also be a bit to basic yet time consuming. For example, running around the ship finding one item to fix another item to fix some engine.

Closing:

I think the best part about this game is its a new IP, especially a new IP from Electronic Arts who are mostly known for prequels and sequels. I think the game is a blast to play if you have some extra time. As for the mid-core gamers, I wouldn’t buy it for the new price, but definitely the used price. You will need at least 12-15 settings to finish the game so plan on it taking some time.
