Mid-Core Gamer Review: Shadow of the Colossus

Hello this is our third review as a mid-core gamer, I promise I will stop numbering them after this one. The game is Shadow of the Colossus. You can read more about my reviews in my first review here.

The Good:

Shadow of the Colossus gives the impression of being massive. The greatest feature of this game is the ability to leave and return later without too many consequences. There are many checkpoints making it easy to pick up the controller for a short amount of time and make a decent amount of progress. As the colossus actually get more distant from your start location you will find save points to get back into battle sooner. When you first encounter a colossus its a thrilling sight to see, feel, and behold. It is unlike anything you could possibly experience. Most of the colossus don’t take too long to figure out (you have to identify the weakness of each colossus to defeat it). Once you follow that up with a thrilling defeat you feel extremely accomplished knowing you were so small and the term: “The bigger they are, the harder they fall” remains true. The controls also feel really tight and make sense for the game-play style. To tie it all together the game also has a pretty fun story line.

The Bad:

Another game where it easy to get lost and you might find yourself getting frustrated to the point of not wanting to play anymore, or having to use a guide to help you along. The difficulty does steadily rise (no going from an easy battle to insanely hard), but by the last colossus you will definitely have a hard time trying to find him.

Closing:

Overall the game presents itself in a format that makes it accessible to just about any mid-core gamer. Having the ability to save between every colossus, and overall not taking too much time to beat (I beat the game in under 15 hours total game play and I didn’t really do that well). Also, if you haven’t bought the game yet it has an attractive price tag.

Game Length: 10-15 Hours
Relationship Status: Outlook is good.
Health Risk: Low
Price: $18.99 New or $9.99 Used via Amazon
Final Verdict: 9 out of 10
